Walks we have done

Read about walks we have enjoyed.

Each week our walks organiser writes a report about the walk  together with a map showing where we went.

Wednesday 19th September.  GR: SO 536 099. Offa’s Dyke.

Leader: Ken C. Meeting Point:  Redbrook  AFC Car Park.

Seven walkers set off from the Football Club car park at 10:30 and within a few minutes we were on our way uphill. At point 1 we joined the road near the incline bridge. The bridge was built in 1812 to carry a tramway to take coal to the Redbrook Iron & Tinplate Company in Lower Redbroook.  We turned left off the road and continued up hill on the Offa’s Dyke trail to reach the Kymin. We spent a few minutes at the Naval Temple, built in recognition of the Royal Navy and sixteen admirals for their part in significant sea battles. Nelson visited the temple in 1802, a year after completion. The extensive views, Sugarloaf could be seen sixteen miles away, were appreciated while we had tea by the Roundhouse. At point 2 we passed the Everard Oak and at point 3 we climbed up to the Suck Stone, thought to be the largest detached rock in the UK. Further up the hill we arrived at the Near Harkening rock, this is concave and it’s said gamekeepers would listen near the stone for poachers in the woods below. In Staunton village we had a brief spell of drizzle. We reached the highest point of the walk at the trig point just above the Buck Stone and this made a good place to stop for lunch. The Buck Stone used to rock but a group of young men rocked it so much it became dislodged and rolled down the hillside. It was returned at great expense and repaired but cemented in place to prevent the same happening again. North of pointwe strayed away from the path. Eventually we found a way down to the road on which we walked west.  Just above the Mill Pond we turned right up hill and then left to retrace our steps back to the start of the walk. After reaching the car park, we thanked Ken and Kate for leading the walk. It was 15:10, time for some refreshment at the Boat Inn before heading home.
